GLYCOLIC ACID is part of the family of alpha-hydroxy acids, also known as AHAs. These organic acids are defined by the presence of a hydroxyl function (-OH) and a carboxyl function (-COOH) found on the same carbon atom, in the alpha position. The molecules in the AHA family are differentiated by the length of their hydrocarbon chains, and Glycolic Acid represents the shortest form with only 2 carbon atoms. This acid is derived from natural sources, such as sugar cane. Glycolic Acid acts both on the epidermis and dermis. The renewal of epidermis takes place in two phases. At first thinning of the stratum corneum takes place through decrease in the cohesion between corneodesmosomes as shown below. Following the thinning of the stratum corneum, regeneration of epidermal tissues takes place as epidermal thickness increases. The dermis becomes much denser as well due to the increase in production of collagen and elastin.
